Senator Bob Menendez, who was convicted on various charges related to corruption in July 2024, announced that he would resign his US Senate seat effective 20 August 2024, leaving the task for appointing a replacement to finish Menendez's term to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (CNN, Newsweek, Patch). Phil Murphy's wife Tammy, who initially ran for the Democratic Party nomination for November's election for the seat, has reportedly taken her name out of consideration (New Jersey Globe). The Senate is expected to reconvene after its August recess on 9 September 2024 (US Senate - Tentative 2024 Schedule).
