Will new federal elections be called in Canada before 5 April 2025?
Closed Mar 23, 2025 05:30PM (10 days ago)
While the Canadian parliament was "prorogued" until 24 March 2025 in January 2025, the New Democratic Party has reportedly told its membership to prepare for early elections to be called as soon as 10 March 2025 (CBC, BBC). For early elections to be called, the Governor General, usually at the request of the prime minister, must dissolve parliament and issue election writs (Elections Canada, Edmonton Journal, Canadian Gazette - Proclamation Dissolving Parliament, Canadian Gazette - Proclamation Issuing Election Writs). The date an early election is to be held is immaterial, and the calling of a by-election will not count (Elections Canada).
