With his CDU/CSU alliance coming in first in federal elections on 23 February 2025, CDU leader Friedrich Merz has called for a deal on a new government to be reached by Easter (20 April 2025) (ABC News, Anadolu Agency, Guardian). Per German Basic Law Article 63, the chancellor is elected by the Bundestag and appointed by the president (Federal Ministry of Justice, Deutscheland.de).
